How can you avoid plagiarising?
Put quotation marks around exact quotations.
If you paraphrase, acknowledge the original author.
When paraphrasing, restate the information in your own words.
Examples (Harvard style of referencing)
Direct Quote:
"In a team, people work together to identify problems, form a consensus about what should be done and implement it." (Welbourne, 2001, p.3)
Incorrect paraphrase:
Welbourne (2001) says that people in teams work together to identify problems, agree what needs to be done and then act on it.
In this example a few words have been changed but the sentence is still basically in Welbourne's words.
Correct Paraphrase:
Welbourne (2001) says that teamwork involves team members agreeing on the nature of the problem and then working out a plan of action.
Here the meaning of the sentence is conveyed in your own words.
